Citing Art in the Upper School: Home

Ms Fernandez

Overview

MLA8  is based on the idea of ''containers."  This style is more flexible and useful for art. What is it and where did you find it?  Your item might be a digital image of a famous painting that could be in "the container" of an art gallery website OR in "the container" of a database.  It is the same picture but you find it in different places.  Your job is to identify and cite the location of the one that you are using.

Same Image Different Containers

Warhol, Andy. "A photo released 30 April 1998 by Sotheby's New York." Britannica ImageQuest, 25 May 2016,  quest.eb.com/search/115_2756786/1/115_2756786/cite. Accessed 1 Feb 2017.

NOTE: When the creator is the same, add an extra word to show the difference in your in-text citations.  For example, (Warhol, "A photo") (Warhol, Orange Marilyn)

Warhol, Andy. Orange Marilyn. 1964. Kamholz, Roger. "Andy Warhol and 'Orange Marilyn.'" Sotheby's, 5 Nov 2013, sothebys.com/en/news-video/blogs/all-blogs/21-days-of-andy-warhol/2013/11/andy-warhol-and-orange-marilyn.html. Accessed 1 Feb. 2017.

NOTE: When the creator is the same in two references, add an extra word to show the difference in your in-text citations.  For example, (Warhol, "A photo") (Warhol, Orange Marilyn)

Practice

Create a Work Cited for one of the sources below.  Be prepared to explain why you have cited it that way (what is item and what is the container) Also, what would you use for your in-text citation (what goes in the parentheses)?

1. Digital image of Salvador Dali 1939 in Wikipedia

2. Any Salvador image that you like in Britannic ImageQuest database of rights-cleared images

3. A 1965 interview of Salvador Dali posted on Youtube

4. You are in the MOMA in New York on February 24, 2017. You see the Persistence of Memory. Cite it.

5. You have discovered a good article in the Advanced Placement Database called "Symbolic Salvador: Exploring Symbolism in the Works of Dali."
